Three Mufflers
In this study, I dissected the aesthetic qualities of three distinct car brands — Porsche, Land Rover, and Jeep — then reconfigured them into the form of a muffler and exhaust pipe. In doing so, I was defamiliarized the viewer with the typical form of the car while also refamiliarizing them with what a car is understood to be. How does a car turn a corner, what can be learned from a detail of a car, and how are aesthetic differences understood? This process is not a linear one and has much to do how ideologies, associations, and prejudices are used to create our own narratives.
